CYTOMEGALIC INCLUSION DISEASE

A three-month-old baby died after a period of persistent cough and dyspnea and abrupt onset of respiratory hemorrhage. Necropsy findings showed hepatosplenomegaly and pneumonic lungs. On microscopic examination, large cytomegalic cells that contain intranuclear inclusions were demonstrated in hepatocytes, pneumocytes, myocardial cells, renal glomeruli and tubules. Also numerous typical lymphocytes in the red pulp of spleen and encephalitis marked by mononuclear perivascular cuffing.

AIDS-RELATED BURKITT LYMPHOMA

GROSS AND MICROSCOPIC FINDINGS OF A 35-YEAR-OLD MAN AFTER POST MORTEM EXAMINATION. A LARGE MASS WAS FOUND IN THE RIGHT CERVICAL REGION. AFTER DISSECTION, THE MASS SHOWN TO BE A FLESHY GRAYISH-WHITE TUMOR MEASURING 12cm OF DIAMETER. KIDNEYS AND LIVER WERE AFFECTED BY TUMORAL NODULES. PANCREAS, THYROID, PLEURAL SURFACE AND HEART (580g) PRESENTED DIFFUSE NEOPLASTIC INVOLVEMENT. SPLEEN SHOWED A MICRONODULAR PATTERN. SYSTEMIC LYMPHADENOPATHY AND SMALL INTESTINE OBSTRUCTING TUMORS WERE ALSO FOUND. THE BRAIN WAS GROSSLY UNREMARKABLE. HE WAS KNOWN TO BE AN HIV-POSITIVE PATIENT WHO WAS NOT SUBMITTED TO TREATMENT.

AUTOSOMAL DOMINANT POLYCYSTIC KIDNEY DISEASE

The organs which are shown here belong to a man in his fifities who died suddenly after an intense bout of headache. He had high blood pressure which he did not mind at controlling carefully. The kidneys were symmetrically enlarged and multicystic, each one weighing over 1000g. Cysts were also found in the liver and in the pancreas, the former more widely involved. The subarachnoid space and leptomeninges were full of blood. Thus, the cause of death was presumably massive subarachnoid hemorrhage.
